Alexander Zverev has become the latest star to complain about the pungent smell of weed at the US Open, likening his court to being in “Snoop Dogg’s living room.”
Maria Sakkari noticed the scent during her first round match against Rebeka Masarova on day one of the tournament.
“The smell, oh my gosh,” Sakkari said.
“I think it’s from the park.”
Sakkari went on to lose 6-4, 6-4 in a major upset but stopped short of blaming the loss on the smell.
“It wasn’t the smell that affected the score in any way,” Sakkari said.
“It was just a comment because I didn’t expect to smell it. But it has nothing to do with the match.”
Zverev, who also played his first round match on Court 17, picked up the scent too.
“Court 17 definitely smells like Snoop Dogg’s living room,” Zverev said.
“Oh my god, it’s everywhere. The whole court smells like weed.”
Unlike Sakkari, Zverev had no such troubles after beating Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
The most dramatic moments early on Day 2 came as the controversy surrounding Coco Gauff’s explosive win over Laura Siegemund continued to swirl.
The 35-year-old qualifier from Germany gave American hopeful Gauff a huge scare on opening night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The match took almost three hours due to Siegemund’s slow pace of play.
The crowd began to get on the German star’s back about how long she was taking.
